Dead Animal Removal in Shreveport

Last reviewed September 8, 2026 against LDWF published rules and federal statute. How we research this site.

Unpleasant, urgent, and almost always the consequence of an earlier problem that was sealed up instead of solved.

Shreveport specifically

Almost always the consequence of an earlier problem that was sealed up instead of solved. Locating it inside a wall cavity before anything is opened up is the whole job; guessing wrong means cutting plaster twice.

Dead animals in Caddo Parish: who does what

The City of Shreveport publishes a short list of what it does not do, and it is unusually blunt: it does not pick up stray animals, does not spray for mosquitoes and does not supply rat poison. All of it goes to Caddo Parish Animal Services instead, and Caddo handles dogs and cats. Nothing in either remit covers an animal that has moved into a roof, so a squirrel in the eaves is a private expense from the first phone call.

For identifying an animal or damage before anyone is paid to look, the LSU AgCenter, Caddo Parish office is at 2408 East 70th Street, Shreveport, LA 71105 (office page).

What Louisiana law says about dead animals

For animals an operator takes, Louisiana accepts deep burial (four feet), incineration or a sanitary landfill, in line with local codes. All Louisiana rules →

Signs, and why they matter

  • A sweet, heavy, unmistakable smell that worsens with heat
  • Clusters of flies or maggots at a single spot on a wall or ceiling
  • A stain spreading on drywall or a ceiling
  • Bacteria and secondary insect infestation
  • Staining and odour that soaks into drywall, timber and insulation and will not simply air out

How removal works

Locate the carcass (often the hardest part, and sometimes requiring a small inspection cut) remove it, then treat and deodorise the area properly. Masking the smell without removing the source does not work.

Dead animal questions

How much does dead animal removal cost in Shreveport?

$200 โ€“ $600, more if drywall has to be opened, depending on access and whether young are present. After a long stay in an attic the cleanup is often the bigger bill (attic restoration).

Is there a wrong time of year to deal with dead animals?

Follows whatever got in earlier, so it peaks a few weeks after each denning season and during the first hot spell.
